20:45 Global_name从何处来? (3558 Bytes) » Oracle Life

注意,我这里说的不是初始化参数global_names。

通过视图global_name可以获得当前参数的设置:

SQL> select * from global_name;

GLOBAL_NAME
--------------------------------------------------
WAPDB.REGRESS.RDBMS.DEV.US.ORACLE.COM

那么这个global_name视图的数据来自何处呢?

create or replace view global_name
(global_name)
as
select value$ from sys.props$ where name = 'GLOBAL_DB_NAME'

我们看到global_name中的信息实际上是来自props$内部表的,取得的信息是其中的global_db_name字段。

SQL> select value$ from sys.props$ where name = 'GLOBAL_DB_NAME';

VALUE$
--------------------------------------------------
WAPDB.REGRESS.RDBMS.DEV.US.ORACLE.COM

SQL> select * from global_name;

GLOBAL_NAME
--------------------------------------------------
WAPDB.REGRESS.RDBMS.DEV.US.ORACLE.COM

SQL> alter database rename global_name to WAPDB.EYGLE.COM;

Database altered

SQL> select * from global_name;

GLOBAL_NAME
--------------------------------------------------
WAPDB.EYGLE.COM

这个global_name为什么很重要呢?

(3809 Bytes) » Fenng's shared items in Google Reader

19:06 11i: The Application Upgrade Made Me Do It (1464 Bytes) » Oracle Security Blog
Performing security assessments on Oracle Applications implementations sometimes involves some detective work.  During our assessments, we have encountered a number of 11.5.10 CU2 implementations where the "Signon Password Hard to Guess" profile option was set to No rather than the strongly recommended Yes.  Each time, the client claimed it used to be set to Yes and closer analysis showed a vast majority of the passwords matched the complexity rules -- so it most likely had been set to Yes.

After a little digging, the culprit turns out to be the CU2 Maintenance Pack.  Step 22 of 24 in Section 1 Pre-Update Tasks is as follows -

22. Change password policy control (conditional)
If the profile option SIGNON_PASSWORD_HARD_TO_GUESS exists with a value of Y, set it to N. You can restore this value to Y after you complete Section 2 of these instructions.

Unfortunately, there is no step in Section 3 to make sure you set the profile option back to Yes.

Securing Oracle Applications is an on-going task that never ends.  After every major upgrade, mini-pack, and RUP, you need to re-evaluate the environment to determine if any security holes have been inadvertently opened.
(7598 Bytes) » Fenng's shared items in Google Reader

17:54 Google Photo Picker (2276 Bytes) » Fenng's shared items in Google Reader
The standard Google dialog for choosing a photo integrates with Picasa Web Albums. If you want to add a photo to your orkut scrapbook, you can select it from your computer, from the web or from Picasa Web Albums. When you upload photos from your computer, they're saved in an album called "Drop Box". For each Blogger blog, Google creates an album that stores the images uploaded to that blog.

That means we could expect to see other Google apps using the same model. Google Docs could have an album that contains all the images uploaded to your documents, spreadsheets and presentations. The Gmail album would include all your image attachments. This way, you wouldn't have to upload the same image multiple times and you could reuse in other Google sites.

It's unclear why Google doesn't provide in the dialog an option to search your images from Picasa Web Albums. You still have to know the location and the name of an image. Google could extend the photo picker to documents and other files, move Google Desktop online and provide an unified way of uploading, organizing and sharing your files.

17:40 The new cool MySQL patch has landed! Check your queries performance! (17117 Bytes) » MySQL Performance Blog

Microslow patch is used by many DBAs and developers to accurately time their queries and to catch those which run less than a second as they can also be a performance killer for a busy application.

Recently I have started the development of an updated version of the patch. The basic idea is the same as for its predecessor - to get more information about query execution logged into slow log, however the new version is loaded with a set of cool new features.

CONNECTION IDENTIFIER

Each slow log entry now contains a connection identifier, so you can trace all the queries coming from a single connection.

CODE:
  1. # Thread_id: 4

MICROTIME RESOLUTION QUERY TIMING

This is the original functionality offered by Microslow patch. The new edition is free of a tiny bug which was to treat long_query_time value as seconds. In effect one could only choose to log all queries to see those which take less than 1s. Now long_query_time is in microseconds and you can set it for example to 300000 which is 0.3s!

CODE:
  1. # Query_time: 0.503016  Lock_time: 0.000048  Rows_sent: 56  Rows_examined: 1113

LOGGING OF THE REPLICATED STATEMENTS

Normally MySQL will not write into slow log any queries executed by the slave’s SQL thread. This patch allows you to change that behavior with the new parameter --log-slow-slave-statements.

THE DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT QUERY EXECUTION

Each query can be executed in various ways. For example it may use indexes or do a full table scan, or a temporary table may be needed. These are the things that you can usually see by running EXPLAIN on the query. The patch will now allow you to see the most important facts about the execution in the log file.

CODE:
  1. # QC_Hit: No  Full_scan: No  Full_join: No  Tmp_table: Yes  Disk_tmp_table: No
  2. # Filesort: Yes  Disk_filesort: No  Merge_passes: 0

QC_Hit tells whether query cache hit occurred or not. If it says ‘Yes’, then all other values will be ‘No’ or 0, because the query was not actually executed by the engine.

If Full_scan is set then most likely the query is a bad one, because it read all the rows from a table.

Full_join means any of the joins didn’t use indexes.

If a temporary table is required for query execution Tmp_table will be set. Sometimes that table must be created on disk instead of in memory, in such case Disk_tmp_table will state that.

Filesort is for indicating that filesort algorithm was used, while Disk_filesort means that sorting was done through temporary files.

INNODB USAGE

The final part are the InnoDB usage statistics. MySQL currently allows you to see many per-session statistics for operations with SHOW SESSION STATUS, but that does not include those of InnoDB, which are always global and shared by all the threads. The patch gives you the opportunity to see those values for a given query.

CODE:
  1. #   InnoDB_IO_r_ops: 19  InnoDB_IO_r_bytes: 311296  InnoDB_IO_r_wait: 0.382176
  2. #   InnoDB_rec_lock_wait: 0.000000  InnoDB_queue_wait: 0.067538
  3. #   InnoDB_pages_distinct: 20

InnoDB_IO_r_ops is the counter for the number of page read operations scheduled. The acutal number of read operations may be different, but since this can be done asynchronously, unfortunatelly there is no good way to measure that. InnoDB_IO_r_bytes is the corresponding value in bytes.

With InnoDB_IO_r_wait you can see how much time (in seconds) it took InnoDB to actually read the data from storage.

InnoDB_rec_lock_wait is the time (in seconds) query had to wait on row locks.

InnoDB_queue_wait is the time (in seconds) query spent either waiting to enter the InnoDB queue or inside that queue waiting for execution.

InnoDB_pages_distinct tells the number of unique pages accessed by the query. This is actually an approximation based on a small hash array representing the entire buffer pool, because it could take a lot of memory to map all the pages. The inaccuracy grows with the number of pages accessed by a query as there is more chance for hash collisions.

In case InnoDB is not used for the query execution that information is written into the log instead the above statistics.

The full slow log entry for a query using InnoDB can look like this:

CODE:
  1. # User@Host: macko[macko] @ localhost []
  2. # Thread_id: 4
  3. # Query_time: 0.503016  Lock_time: 0.000048  Rows_sent: 56  Rows_examined: 1113
  4. # QC_Hit: No  Full_scan: No  Full_join: No  Tmp_table: Yes  Disk_tmp_table: No
  5. # Filesort: Yes  Disk_filesort: No  Merge_passes: 0
  6. #   InnoDB_IO_r_ops: 19  InnoDB_IO_r_bytes: 311296  InnoDB_IO_r_wait: 0.382176
  7. #   InnoDB_rec_lock_wait: 0.000000  InnoDB_queue_wait: 0.067538
  8. #   InnoDB_pages_distinct: 20
  9. SET timestamp=1193841780;
  10. SELECT DISTINCT c from sbtest where id between 501895 and 502895 order by c;

or if InnoDB was not used:

CODE:
  1. # Time: 071031 20:03:16 # User@Host: macko[macko] @ localhost []
  2. # Thread_id: 12
  3. # Query_time: 0.026385  Lock_time: 0.000158  Rows_sent: 1  Rows_examined: 0
  4. # QC_Hit: No  Full_scan: No  Full_join: No  Tmp_table: No  Disk_tmp_table: No
  5. # Filesort: No  Disk_filesort: No  Merge_passes: 0
  6. # No InnoDB statistics available for this query
  7. SELECT COUNT(1) FROM t2;

Important note: Although the patch was tested and run successfully under stress with both synthetic benchmarks and real database traffic, it's considered experimental and as such I don't recommend using it in production or on any important system!

The patch is available for MySQL Community 5.0.45.

14:46 Social Media Success, and Free Resources (6812 Bytes) » Fenng's shared items in Google Reader
We're amazed and excited by the incredible turnout for yesterday's online seminar, Enterprise 2.0: Using Social Media in the Workplace, which we co-presented with Forrester. The hundreds of enthusiastic responses and active participants who attended really show just how much potential there is for businesses to make the most out of social media tools such as blogging.

If you attended the seminar, you'll want to check out the wide array of resources that we've created, beginning with a one-hour streaming video of the entire presentation, complete with audio and the slides that attendees could view. You can also download a series of PDF documents:

And then be sure to sign up for a live demo of Movable Type -- space is limited, and demo slots are going quickly, so be sure to sign up for your preferred time as early as you can.

During the course of the Seminar yesterday, we also got a bunch of great questions from the audience, and weren't able to answer all of them during the short amount of time we had. So, we've grabbed a few of the more common ones to answer here.

Q: Can disagreement among blog commenters sometimes be beneficial to an organization, or is it always better to nip arguments in the bud?

6A: This really depends on your community and the conversation at hand. Inside an organization, if you're blogging on an intranet, people will generally be pretty civil because of the social pressure to act appropriately around coworkers. On a public blog, you can often keep even a contentious conversation from becoming uncivil by simply requiring some form of identification from your commenters. But platforms like Movable Type have very robust tools for moderating conversations -- if you see a topic that's really becoming heated, you can always set comments to be moderated by default, and then publish only the comments that are appropriate. It's a lot easier to err on the side of being more restrained and then open up over time than it is to try to shut things down after the fact. For more, see "Control Your Comments: It's Your Lobby", or consult the Six Apart Guide to Business Blogging, which has an entire chapter on creating a commenting policy.
Q: When should we use blogs or wiki software? What's the difference?
6A: Blogs and wiki software are very complementary tools, with slightly different goals. Platforms like Movable Type give you the rich ability to easily update web pages, host conversations, store media assets, and create standalone web pages, all within the easy experience of a blogging platform. Wikis are a great supplement to these kinds of tools if you want to add in the ability to have a number of people collaborate on a document to reach a consensus. In contrast, blogs are a great tool for providing status updates or for discussing topics where multiple individual viewpoints can be useful.
One major social consideration in deploying these tools is that since most wiki tools allow anyone to edit a document, contributors can be concerned about getting appropriate credit (or blame!) for their contributions, and discussions where people have opposing viewpoints can become difficult, resulting in successive edits to replace other people's content. Those caveats aside, wikis and blogs enhance each other's functionality, and page 9 of the Business Blogging Guide offers a more in-depth compare-and-contrast look at the two technologies. If you're looking for a platform that integrates these tools, you should consider SuiteTwo, an Intel-led Web 2.0 suite for the Enterprise which incorporates wikis as well as using Movable Type as its flagship best-of-breed blogging component.
Q: We've decided to launch a few blogs as a trial project, but how should we promote them or get more people reading them?
6A: The right techniques for promoting a blog vary widely, depending on what audience you're trying to reach. Inside an organization, you should take advantage of the other channels that people are already using to get information. Include links to your blog in company newsletters, list your blog's web address in your email signature, and display recent headlines from your blog on your company's intranet homepage. (Most portal software applications let you include RSS feeds pretty easily.)
If your'e trying to reach an audience outside your company, you'll want to use all the traditional methods for promoting any communications channel. Make sure all of your staff members who talk to customers or the public know about your blogs and are comfortable describing them to others. Don't be shy about including your blog's address on your business cards, in any materials that are included with your products, or even on direct-mail communications or in print ads. Every channel that you reach your audience with now has the potential to become a two-way ongoing conversation through your blog.
Thanks again to everyone who participated in the web seminar yesterday. Please be sure to check out the seminar resources we've posted, and if you want to be the first to know of similar free events in the future, subscribe to our feed and we'll keep you in the loop on upcoming events.
(5215 Bytes) » Fenng's shared items in Google Reader

(5790 Bytes) » Fenng's shared items in Google Reader

(1472 Bytes) » Fenng's shared items in Google Reader

(1298 Bytes) » Fenng's shared items in Google Reader

07:46 Oracle Parallel Query Abuse (6845 Bytes) » Fenng's shared items in Google Reader
Oracle’s Parallel Query Option (PQO) is a fantastic tool, but much like any good tool, it can very easily be used in the wrong situation or simply abused. In those cases, PQO can actually make database performance much worse. Let’s examine some common misuses or misperceptions regarding optimal and efficient PQO usage.

1.      PQO make sense universally on any SMP or multi-processer database server

Not really. Why use PQO on a small dual core server just because it’s available? And why use PQO on a big SMP server with lots of CPU’s, but maybe not as robust an IO subsystem – what advantage does that offer? And my favorite abuse, we have a 64 CPU server, so we’ll just define all important tables and indexes as parallel 64 (or even some lesser number significantly greater than 1). How many of those peoples’ servers will be running many concurrent queries anyhow? So why sub-divide the work and force sharing CPU’s across processes? We don’t drive the posted speed limit simply because we can if the weather makes that a questionable choice. So we should use the same discretion when planning PQO usage.

2.      PQO “by definition” will make any large operation faster when “parallelized”

Right – and I have some wonderful “magic beans” to sell to people who blindly believe that theory. Oracle has to spawn additional shared server processes (or reuse those that are lying around still from recent completed PQO operations). So the cost of spawning additional processes and their footprints must be accounted for in the grand scheme of things. Plus, Oracle will need a “coordinator” process to coalesce all the results – and that too has a small cost. So calculate all this into your assumptions before using PQO. But for those of us less scientific, think of PQO as being like a grocery store checkout line. If you only have a couple items in your grocery cart, will forcibly spreading them across multiple checkout lanes get you out the any door sooner? And even if you do have an overly full cart, will spreading your items across checkout lanes that are already busy be any better? There are obvious times (i.e. rules) that are better than others. We simply need to apply the same clear thinking when using PQO.

3.      When I say parallel N, Oracle only exactly and only spawns N server processes.

OK – so now I also have the clear rights to sell the “Brooklyn Bridge” to people who may think this. Oracle and parallel queries are much more complicated than this. For example an ORDER BY or GROUP BY will double the number of non-coordinator processes required. So we have at least two times N now. But then there are “init.ora” parameters to limit or govern PQO usage. So some queries might get the full PQO amount, some might execute linearly, while others may use <= N processes due to such configuration parameters. The only way to know for sure is to monitor it live.

4.      I have a super-fast IO subsystem and multiple top-end CPU’s, so I can increase PQO usage a “wee bit” beyond my actual CPU count.

OK – I’m 100% guilty of doing this on occasion. In fact, I might even do this more often than not. But I am cognoscente of the above issues and have planned according – and still have a reasonable PQO scenario where my IO is 100% not my chief bottleneck. Thus in those clear cases I will extend beyond the actual CPU count in my PQO settings. I’ve even gone two to four times higher in the right circumstances. And in those cases it has made a clear and measureable difference. But be careful of when it does not make sense. For an easy test to verify this, simply set PQO to degree four on your dual core desktop or laptop and run several concurrent queries. It will not only run slower, but painfully so.

5.      I have a big multi-processer server, so full-table scans are always the way to go.

As silly as this may sound at first, I’ve seen this in many data warehousing scenarios. I think it happens because somewhere someone wrote that “parallel full-table scans were efficient”. But that author meant in clearly reasonable scenarios – and not universally. Yet this remains one of the top data warehousing tuning mistakes I see. Think about a DW query – it may scan millions of rows in tables with many billions of rows. Why force a full-table scan when there is at least a ten-to-one, if not a one-hundred-to-one, reduction factor. That’s exactly what indexes are for – and index scans can be done in parallel. I’ve seen improvements as large as 1000% from undoing this simple PQO misuse.

Matt Lind took us up on our suggestion of a werewolf, and we’re awarding him the $50 for it. He even carved a Fedora logo into the werewolf’s face and put a Red Hat fedora on top.

Red Hatter Brian Kearney wasn’t eligible for the prize, but his family carved up this great trio: Shadowman, a traditional jack-o-lantern, and his son’s Harry Potter inspired “zap” pumpkin.

Finally, we really enjoyed this digital art submission from Mola Pahnadayan.

06:00 Technological advances continue... (4148 Bytes) » The Tom Kyte Blog

Technological advances continue to amaze me.

I remember setting up my first token ring network.  Huge cables, not very user friendly configuration (why would everyone want to run a cable to a network box like that), everything really big, really slow.

That was almost twenty years ago.

Today, we see things like this. An SD card with enough hardware to be a wi-fi device and store 2gb of stuff.  Or, if you are cheap like me - a 1gb normal SD card for $10 (yes, I had to buy it just because - it was $10)  Now I have lots of room for pictures.

Things are moving scary fast sometimes.  Hard to keep up with everything.

About 10 years ago (ok, 10 years and a month ago), I was asked to review a new PC configuration for a friend, this is the document they sent me from the vendor:

This machine would take about 2 weeks to deliver from the date of purchase.
Gateway 2000 G6-233

Basic Machine
• Processor: Intel 233MHz Pentium II Processor w/ MMX Technology
• Memory: 64MB SDRAM
• Cache: Internal 512K L2 secondary write-back cache
• Monitor: CrystalScan700 17" color monitor
• Graphics Accelerator: nVidia 4MB AGP Graphics Accelerator
• Hard Drive: 4.0GB Ultra ATA hard drive
• Floppy Drive: 3.5" 1.44MB diskette drive
• CD-ROM: 12X min./24X max. CD-ROM drive
• Multimedia Package: Ensoniq wavetable sound card & Boston Acoustics Micromedia Speaker System
• Fax/Modem: TelePath 33.6 Data / 14.4 Fax Modem
• Case: G-Series Mid Tower
• Keyboard: 104+ Keyboard
• Mouse: MS IntelliPoint Mouse

Bundled Software

• MS Money 97 & Quicken SE
• MMX Technology Bundle
• Microsoft Windows 95
• Application Software: MS Office 97, Professional Edition

Service
• Service Program: Gateway Gold Premium Service and Support (3yrs. Onsite) added: US$99

Additional Peripheral Hardware
This hardware is highly recommended.

The scanner, in conjunction with the fax/modem above, replaces the need for a separate fax machine (to fax outbound, you would scan and ‘print’, to receive faxes, the computer would just be turned on). Additionally, the scanner allows you to digitally store press releases, magazine articles, photographs an so on.

The digital camera allows you to capture electronically what it not printed in the papers.

The tape backup unit is a must if you are going to store items you wish to keep for a lifetime. The hard disk will fail at some point. If you go to the trouble of scanning and storing keepsake items, you do not want to lose them in a hard disk failure. The tape device is large enough to backup the entire system overnight, an operation you would want to do once a week/every other week.

We investigated color LCD monitors (space savings, an LCD monitor would be about 2 inches thick, the CRT above is about 17 inches deep) but feel that at this time they are still too new and not readily in supply. The cost of the LCD screen would be as much as the base system itself ($3,500-$4,000 for a 14 inch LCD display). We are not recommending this at this time.

• Scanner: Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 5Pse Scanner
• Digital Camera: Epson Photo PC 500
• Tape Backup Unit: TR4 SCSI TBU and tape (w/SCSI controller)

Pricing
Total Price: US $4200

What cost $4200 in 1997 would cost $5218.48 in 2006.  10 years ago - state of the art was 64mb of RAM, 4gb hard disk.  And cost five times what you would expect to pay today.

Nothing to add to that, just find it amazing sometimes.

05:31 Moleskine的GTD应用 (8920 Bytes) » Fenng's shared items in Google Reader

(3532 Bytes) » DBA notes

©作者:Fenng 发布在 dbanotes.net

Monit

(5134 Bytes) » Fenng's shared items in Google Reader

2.jpg

3.jpg

4.jpg

02:48 Source code of Oracle AUL/MyDUL, wroten in Java, but not jDUL copy (2438 Bytes) » DBA Tools

Few days ago, somebody (they wrote a MYjDUL utility) post a message on a public forum said that AUL/MyDUL is copied from jDUL open source project. This is not true, when I started to write AUL/MyDUL utility in 2004 Q4, I did not know this open source project at all, else I may not start to write this utility. The first version is also written in Java language, I spent a lot of time in AnySQL utility with Java programming, so Java is the language I know best at that time.

You can download the source code here, I redesigned and rewrote it with standard C language for self-protection and for high performance. There are three major files.

1, OracleBlock.java -- Interface Defination
2, OracleBlockV2Big.java -- Implemention for Big Edian
3, OracleBlockV2Little.java -- Implemention for Little Edian

But I don't remember how to get it work, but you can still get to know the Oracle data block format from the source code lines.

Although it's written in Java, but not a jDUL copy.
